2011 MLK Celebration Parade & Rally at Magic Island

The 23nd Annual parade began at Magic Island at 9:00 a.m. and made its way through Waikiki along Kalakaua Avenue to Kapiolani Park and the Unity Celebration, with featured music and entertainment, local and ethnic foods, a children's playground, community booths and vendors.

Many groups carried their own message of equality to stop human trafficking while others still hope to be seen by their character and not by their race. Crowd of mixed cultures and ethnicities was proud to celebrate the King's life and to remember what he stood for and how he changed history!

Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Huge waves! (Day 16)

Huge waves come pounding in at Sharks Cove on the North Shore of Oahu.

Surf's up on Oahu's North Shore!!! I first heard about the big waves last Friday on the evening news and suggested to the Hubster that we should take a drive around the island to check out the waves. I also cautioned him that it may rain and we should get an early start but as usual...we slept in. Luckily the sun was still out when we started and throughout the drive around the island, it was a combination of sunny and overcast skies. Currently, there's a high surf warning and advisory in effect until tomorrow due to extremely hazardous high surf forecast.

Mochi pounding (Day 15)

Mochi pounding at the 2011 Honbushin New Year Mochitsuki Festival.

Mochi pounding is the biggest event of the New Year’s celebration in Hawaii. Rice and water are pounded with a kine–a big hammer, while another leans in to knead with hand–until the mixture becomes the chewy, glutinous substance known as mochi (a delicious sticky rice cake). The sequence demands precision as the kneading is done swiftly between hammer strikes on the wetted bed of rice.

Location: Honbushin International Center, Mililani

A group of teenagers paddle an outrigger canoe at the Ala Wai Canai.

Paddling with an outrigger canoe looks like fun and enjoyable! Paddling is of the most popular activities in the Hawaiian islands and Hawaii has more than 60 canoe clubs with a lot of competitive as well as recreational paddlers actively involved in the sport; canoe racing throughout the state.
